EDTE 6400 - Teacher as Advocate and Leader


Teacher as Advocate and Leader is a course focused on preparing teachers to be advocates and leaders in their school and in the field of education. Students acquire knowledge about the key qualities of leaders and advocates and engage in content focused on the various ways in which teachers can serve in these capacities. Students work independently and in groups to research strategies that will enhance their abilities to serve as a teacher leader and teacher advocate at the local, national, and global level. Students complete 30 contact hours throughout the semester volunteering for an approved educational agency, non-profit organization, or government organization that aims to enhance learning and development of young children birth through grade 3.

Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture, 2.0 field experience/internship
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will create collegial and productive work environments that encourage colleagues to research and implement evidence-based practices.
  • Students will participate in the development and advocacy efforts for policies and practices to improve the early care and education of all young children and their families.
  • Students will research practices and procedures that aim to enhance the outcomes of young children and disseminate findings to key stakeholders without bias.
  • Students will utilize data to make informed decisions and to advocate for relevant topics in early care and education at the local, national, and global levels.
  • Students will provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to other practitioners and families.
  • Students will analyze one’s dispositions, skills, and self-efficacy with respect to leadership and advocacy.
  • Students will model professional and ethical practices.
