EDEC 6920 - Graduate Practicum I: Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education


Practicum I in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education is a practical, field-based learning experience involving classroom observations, lesson planning, and teaching of young children with and without disabilities. Students focus on addressing content standards through thematic lessons and utilizing positive behavior intervention and support to address challenging behavior in early childhood environments. Students complete 60 hours of fieldwork throughout the semester in an approved early childhood education or early childhood special education placement.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 practicum, 1.0 seminar

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to utilize instructional strategies and tiered instruction appropriate to children’s individualized needs.
  • Students will be able to adapt general and specialized curricula and materials to meet the diverse needs of all children.
  • Students will be able to develop instructional plans with clear learning goals across content areas that align with educational standards and are developmentally and individually appropriate for all learners.
  • Students will be able to apply theories, evidence-based practices, and assistive and instructional technology in the implementation of lessons and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Students will be able to provide proactive, positive behavioral support strategies to prevent and manage inappropriate child behavior and facilitate healthy social interactions.
  • Students will be able to reflect on professional practices and create professional goals to improve one’s teaching effectiveness and align with school and district priorities.
  • Students will be able to engage in professional and ethical practices with children with diverse needs and of varying ages across multiple settings.
