EDEC 6110 - Collaboration with Families, Colleagues, and the Community


Collaboration with Families, Colleagues, and the Community provides students with the ability and knowledge to effectively collaborate and create partnerships with families, colleagues, and community agencies to improve programs, services, and outcomes for young children with and without disabilities. Students develop an understanding of ethical responsibilities to children and families while supporting families in decisions that affect their child utilizing culturally responsive practices. Students acquire strategies for developing positive and supportive relationships with families and connecting families to resources and support networks.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will reflect on the importance of family involvement and its significance on the child’s education.
  • Students will engage in ethically responsible and effective collaboration with families through interactions that are sensitive and responsive to cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity.
  • Students will acquire effective strategies to engage in positive communication and collaboration with parents and colleagues.
  • Students will implement strategies that can be used to create parental and family involvement and partnerships.
  • Students will identify community agencies and support networks as resources in the lives of families while formulating effective strategies for collaboration.
  • Students will demonstrate sensitivity and understanding of family characteristics and its influences on family concerns, emotions, and priorities with respect to having a child with disabilities.
  • Students will work systematically as a team following established conditions necessary for effective team functioning and engaging in collaborative goal setting with families.
