EDHE 5885 - Historical and Contemporary Issues in Higher Education


An introduction to the study of the history of higher education including the role of the church and state in foundations, structures, personnel, and development of American higher education; and an introduction to contemporary issues including challenges and opportunities for higher education in American society.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Articulate an understanding of the historical context and philosophical foundations of American higher education.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary and potential issues that face American higher education.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of student, faculty, and administrative characteristics and the challenges facing each of these groups.
  • Differentiate and explain purposes, structures, and functions among and within types of institutions.
  • Identify and describe societal influences on the governance and operations of colleges and universities.
