EDTE 7380 - Democratic Education and other Progressive Models


This course will examine the Democratic Education movement and other progressive education initiatives. Specifically we will examine the writings of Jean Jacques Rousseau, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, A.S. Neill, Ivan Illich and John Caldwell Holt to examine the tenants of democratic education and the de-schooling and un-schooling movements.

Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will apply the principles of democratic education to contemporary problems in education.
  • Students will be able to develop a curricular plan based on democratic principles.
  • Students will be able to discuss the practical aspects of progressive schools and democratic schools.
  • Students will be able to explain the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of democratic education and the de-schooling and unschooling movements.
