EDEL 5480 - Teaching Science to Fourth and Fifth Graders


Prepares students to teach all areas of Science in fourth and fifth grade classrooms, based on a sound understanding of child development, knowing the content to be taught, and how to effectively teach the content to students. This course fulfills the Mathematics Education portion of requirements for the Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Successful students will be able to engage children in science learning activities that include observing, inferring, asking questions, designing experiments, controlling variables, taking measurements, building arguments, and analyzing data.
  • Successful students will be able to guide children’s explorations in science and in what it means to think like a scientist.
  • Successful students will be able to incorporate local and community resources into their science teaching.
  • Successful students will be able to plan for and manage safe, effective science learning environments that promote success for all and the welfare of all living things.
  • Successful students will be able to select and use formative assessments to inform instructional plans and support effectiveness of teaching and learning science, for all learners.
  • Successful students will be able to use their knowledge of the nature of science, scientific claims, evidence, and proof to participate effectively in conversations about scientific matters at classroom, school and community levels.
