JOUR 8160 - Seminar in Mass Media Research


Students present research ideas to seminar, discuss progress and problems, report and defend projects before group. Emphasis on research strategy and agenda development, the nature and function of theory in mass communication research, and issues with measurement and scaling, as well as data reporting, explanation, and positioning in an area of study.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Begin developing an agenda of research.
  • Perform rigorous criticism toward generating knowledge.
  • Position one’s current research within that agenda of research.
  • Present modified written projects with emphases on the same.
  • Present project to an audience, with an understanding of positions in research area, content, and methodology(ies).
  • Realize the nature of research theory and methodology, as well as research structure and content.
  • Recognize theoretical, methodological, and practical implications of research, including connections to description, explanation, prediction, and control.
  • Understand a range of research approaches and how they complement one another.
  • Understand the limitations of research approaches.
