ENG 7970 - New Media Composition in English Studies


Focuses on the impact computer media has had and is having on verbal and visual communication, the nature and boundaries of texts, reading, literacy and college English pedagogy. We will explore the use of newer forms of composition and communication (rhetorical, artistic and in between) in “new media”: hypertext, blogs, wikis, games, social media, YouTube, and rhetorically interesting web sites and read and discuss a variety of scholarship and examples.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Become conversant in historical development of new media in English Studies fields.
  • Become familiar with theoretical approaches to and scholarship on new media and digital composition.
  • Consider implications of new media for teaching college English composition.
  • Gain fluency in composing in multiple modes of new media by completing digital composition projects.
  • Practice critical reading of new media texts through rhetorical analysis.
