Relates classical rhetorical theory to developments in contemporary rhetorical theory, criticism, practice, methodology, and pedagogy.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Examine critically alternative possibilities to current rhetorical traditions.
  • Examine critically rhetorical traditions as they arise out of the classical age.
  • Relate theories and traditions of rhetoric to current writing pedagogy.
  • Understand differences between concepts such as rhetorical histories and histories of rhetoric.
  • Understand some of the issues and problems in historicizing rhetorical traditions.
