ENG 5890 - Teaching College English


Designed for teaching associates who have full responsibility for their own sections of ENG 1510. Goals include introducing the theories and practices related to the first-year writing program at Ohio University; reading and responding to articles by scholars in composition studies in order to understand ‘best practices’ for teaching writing; encouraging teachers to develop their own theoretically-based goals for teaching writing; and working collaboratively to share and address practical problems in teaching.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Learn how to address the rhetorical competencies for ENG 1510 through different teaching methods and lessons.
  • Learn how to teach ENG 1510 using the curriculum set out by the director of composition.
  • Share experiences as new teachers to OU with classmates; provide a constructive environment for responding to teachers’ problems and successes.
  • Understand the role that research and theory can play in helping teachers to build effective teaching strategies and teaching personas.
