EDTE 6160 - Managing and Monitoring Student Learning


This course is designed to help general education teachers and general education teacher candidates, with a focus on grades 7-12 become more proficient at managing classroom procedures as well as student behavior. In addition this class will give teachers and teacher candidates the skills needed to use classroom assessment data more efficiently and effectively through analysis and application, thereby promoting data-driven decision making and problem solving based on collected data.

Requisites: EDTE 5100 and 5100L and 5600
Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
  • Design assessments based on student needs and content specifications.
  • Analyze assessment results of multiple types of assessments.
  • Become more efficient and effective using classroom accountability procedures.
  • Build on his/her knowledge of recognized instructional, curricular and assessment
  • Build on student’s knowledge of current databases available at different levels for research on the evaluation of student learning and improved student achievement as well as research on teaching strategies and methods to improve instruction.
  • Gain an understanding of and identify when to use Selected-Response, Constructed-Response and Authentic Assessments.
  • Gain an understanding of the differences between norm-referenced and criterion-referenced tests.
  • Gain an understanding of what the process of “Value Added” means to the classroom teacher as well as how to interpret this dimension in their classroom, building and district assessment results.
  • Teach a collaborative lesson to their peers applying course content.
  • Understand and apply the principles of designing an effective learning environment.
  • Understand and be able to design instruction based on assessment results “Now what?”
