EDHE 7800 - The Professoriate and Academic Administration in Higher Education


The purpose is to provide contextual knowledge of the evolution of the professoriate in American higher education, as well as the roles, responsibilities, institutional concerns, and career issues of individual members of the faculty. Issues associated with academic administration (e.g., workload) are also covered.

Requisites:
Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will assess faculty relationships within and across academic and administrative units.
  • Students will become aware of demographic changes in faculty and students that affect the future of American higher education.
  • Students will differentiate individual and institutional concerns of contingent, term-appointment, and tenure-eligible faculty.
  • Students will examine alternative conceptions and institutional priorities concerning teaching, research, integration, and service.
  • Students will explore the history, contemporary practices, and future of tenure in American higher education.
  • Students will learn about the evolution of the American professoriate from its beginnings to the present and into the future.
  • Students will understand legal and ethical dynamics that can affect their institutional, collegial, and educational relationships.
