EDCE 8550 - Counseling Theory Advanced


Theories and systems of psychology as applied to counseling and psychotherapy. Integration of theories and methods of counseling and psychotherapy to assessment and diagnosis, goal-setting, treatment, procedures, and evaluation of progress and outcomes. Use of case study to demonstrate knowledge in the treatment of selected mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Application of concepts of human development to personal growth and career-life planning. Review of innovative methods, recent research, and issues and trends.

Learning Outcomes:
  • To acquire in-depth knowledge of the treatment of selected mental, emotional, stress, and behavioral disorders within a contextual framework. (PHD.4.H.3, PHD.4.G.4).
  • To demonstrate an personal philosophy of counseling and leadership that reflects the integration of various counseling theories. (PHD.4.H.1, PHD.4.I.1.).
  • To gain knowledge about the common factors that facilitate psychological change without regard to a particular theoretical approach. (PHD.4.G.2.).
  • To increase in-depth knowledge of an integrated approach to counseling and psychotherapy, including: knowledge of basic concepts of growth and change. (PHD.4.G.2., PHD.4.G.1, PHD.4.G.4.).
  • To increase in-depth knowledge of assessment, diagnosis, research, case conceptualization, treatment planning, procedures, and techniques, and assessment of counseling progress and outcomes. (PHD.4.G.2., PHD.4.G.1, PHD.4.G.4.).
  • To increase knowledge of organic, psychological, systems, and contextual theories of counseling and psychotherapy. (PHD.4.G.4. PHD.4.H.2., PHD.4.G.3., PHD.4.G.1.).
