EDCE 7707 - Counseling & Mental Health Awareness in Schools


Common mental disorders diagnosed in children and adolescents will be discussed along with treatment modalities. The school professional’s role in identifying and/or supporting students with a mental health diagnosis will be discussed. Likely to be of interest to students and practitioners in education, social work, psychology, counseling, speech and language pathology, and other professions linked to schools.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Discuss common mental health disorders and treatment modalities.
  • Learn a framework for understanding children in the school environment with a mental health disorder.
  • Learn about mental health in the elementary school years.
  • Learn specific information about mental health agencies in southeastern Ohio, understand referral procedures and how to work collaboratively with counseling agencies.
  • Learn specific strategies to support students who have a mental health diagnosis.
  • Understand the Adlerian.
