EDCE 7700 - Brief and Solution-Focused Therapy


Provides student in school and clinical counseling settings with an overview of various brief and solution focused therapy theories, techniques, and practices. Particular attention will be devoted to the study of the brief and solution focused therapy. Lectures will be supplemented by extensive use of videotapes and class exercises designed to thoroughly immerse the student in brief therapy ways of thinking.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Develop a working knowledge of how the general principles of brief therapy are applied with clients.
  • Develop an awareness and understanding of how brief therapy approaches impact minority and other diverse population groups.
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge in a selected area of brief therapy research or application.
  • Evaluate brief therapy theories and approaches in terms of how they apply to individual counseling styles and develop strategies for personal implementation as appropriate.
  • Examine the relationship between brief therapy and multicultural counseling.
  • Understand the basic principles of several theories and approaches to brief therapy.
