EDCE 7390 - Family Counseling


The purpose is to provide an introduction to family counseling, with an emphasis on theoretical foundations and family counseling techniques.

Requisites:
Credit Hours: 4

Learning Outcomes:
  • Applies relevant research findings to the practice of family counseling (CACREP III.J.1; III.J.2; III.J.3).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and legal considerations specifically related to the practice of family counseling and an ability to apply and adhere to these standards (CACREP III.A.2; III.B.1; III.B.2).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history, philosophy, and trends in marriage, couple, and family counseling (CACREP III.A.1).
  • Demonstrates an understanding of principles and models of assessments appropriate for family counseling in a multicultural society (CACREP III.G.1; III.G.2).
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the impact of addiction, trauma, psychopharmacology, physical and mental health, wellness, and illness on family functioning (CACREP III.G.3).
  • Develop an understanding of a variety of models and the theories of individual and family development, transitions across the lifespan, and theories of individual, cultural, family, and community resilience(CACREP II.3.a; II.3.d; III.A.5; III.A.6).
  • Develop an understanding of how to select appropriate models of techniques based on the family’s presenting problem, in addition to demonstrating the skills in applying them (CACREP II.5.e;III.C.3;III.B.1-2;III.H.1-3).
  • Develop an understanding of the cultural context of relationships, issues, and trends in a multicultural society (CACREP II.2.d; II.3.a; III.E.1; III.E.2; III.E.3)..
  • Develop an understanding of the nature and needs of persons at all developmental levels (CACREP II.3.a; II.3.d).
  • Develop understanding of healthy family functioning, human sexuality, issues of family life-cycle dynamics, family structure, family of origin, intergenerational influences; professional issues relevant to practice(CACREP III.C.1-C.4).
  • Develop understanding of interventions appropriate in helping relationships with families from systems perspective, including recognition of importance of family, social networks, community systems(CACREP II.5.e;III.C.3;III.B.1-2;III.H.1-3).
  • Develop understanding of roles and functions of family counselors in a variety of practice settings, in relation to other helping professions,knowledge of professional organizations, standards, credentials relevant (CACREP III.A.2; III.B.1; III.B.2).
