EDCE 6860 - Multicultural Counseling


This course addresses social and cultural diversity in the counseling profession, including history and development of multicultural and social justice counseling. The purpose of the course is to increase counselor cultural awareness of self and others, gain understanding of privilege and oppression, learn help-seeking behaviors of diverse client populations, and develop counselor helping skills and application of practical knowledge. The course examines and applies multicultural and social justice counseling competencies and advocacy counseling competencies endorsed by the American Counseling Association.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will apply theories and models of multicultural counseling, cultural identity development, and social justice and advocacy.
  • Students will articulate strategies for identifying and eliminating barriers, prejudices, and processes of intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination.
  • Students will demonstrate understanding of multicultural and social justice counseling competencies.
  • Students will describe advocacy processes needed to address institutional and social barriers that impede access, equity, and success for clients.
  • Students will describe effects of power and privilege for counselors and clients.
  • Students will explain the impact of spiritual beliefs on clients’ and counselors’ worldviews.
  • Students will identify and describe various help-seeking behaviors of diverse clients.
  • Students will identify multicultural and pluralistic characteristics within and among diverse groups nationally and internationally.
  • Students will identify systemic and environmental factors that affect human development, functioning, and behavior.
  • Students will identify the impact of heritage, attitudes, beliefs, understandings, and acculturative experiences on an individual’s views of others.
  • Students will articulate cultural factors and apply advocacy strategies relevant to clinical mental health counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, and school counseling.
