CE 7530 - Biodegration and Bioremediation


The major biochemical pathways that are significant in the microbial conversion of xenobiotic compounds to common metabolic intermediates. Interpretation of quantification of biodegration reactions and investigation of various physiochemical and environmental factors that impact biodegradation reactions.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be introduced to experimental methods relevant to bioremediation.
  • Students will be introduced to the topic of microorganisms (growth, nutrition, redox).
  • Students will gain an understanding of transcription, regulation, and enzymes.
  • Students will gain an understanding pf biostimulation and phytoremediation.
  • Students will learn about natural attenuation and bioaugmentation.
  • Students will understand how BTEX, PAHs, chlorinated hydrocarbons, explosives, heavy metals, and pesticides transform.
