OCOM 7020 - Obstetrics and Gynecology


This four-week Obstetrics and Gynecology course will teach students about: the menstrual cycle, menstrual irregularities, and how culture affects menarche and menopause; variations in human sexuality; the etiology and psychosocial aspects of infertility; contraception; antenatal care; the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of complications during pregnancy; appropriate prevention, diagnosis, and complications during pregnancy; facilitating & monitoring normal labor and delivery as well as complications of labor and delivery; postpartum care; and breastfeeding.

Course Outcomes
  • Correlate appropriate antenatal care with lower maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.
  • Correlate appropriate prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complications during pregnancy with lower maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.
  • Correlate breastfeeding with outcomes for mothers, infants, and children.
  • Ensure awareness of the fundamentals of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complications during pregnancy.
  • Ensure awareness of women’s varied perspectives on and experiences with birth including natural childbirth, medicated childbirth, cesarean section, and pregnancy loss.
  • Ensure understanding of how to facilitate normal labor.
  • Ensure understanding of the variations in human sexuality.
  • Ensure understanding of common gynecologic procedures and surgery.
  • Ensure understanding of contraception and options in reproductive choice.
  • Ensure understanding of gynecologic malignancies.
  • Ensure understanding of how to monitor normal labor and delivery as well as complications associated with labor and delivery.
  • Ensure understanding of lactation physiology and clinical aspects of breastfeeding management.
  • Ensure understanding of the etiology and psychosocial aspects of infertility.
  • Ensure understanding of the evaluation of abnormal bleeding.
  • Ensure understanding of the fundamentals of antenatal care.
  • Ensure understanding of the fundamentals of postpartum care.
  • Ensure understanding of the menstrual cycle, menstrual irregularities, and how culture affects menarche and menopause.
