OCOM 7081 - Fundamentals in Clinical Osteopathic Medicine 3
This course is the third of four courses that help students develop the clinical skills necessary to master core competencies. It builds upon the clinical skills learned previously and continues the development of clinical skills necessary for the practice of osteopathic medicine. Osteopathic manipulative medicine skills and clinical and community experiences are an integral part of this course. Students receive guidance in specific psychosocial and psychomotor skills, and the importance of an evidence-based approach to clinical application in the practice of medicine is reinforced. In the classroom or laboratory setting, students master specific clinical skills that prepare them to become more involved in patient care and clinical learning. For example, they may learn how to deal with the angry patient and/or how best to discuss end-of-life issues. Students will continue to refine skills learned in the first-year clinical courses, such as use of the problem-oriented medical record and SOAP notes. The format of the course consists of clinical lab sessions utilizing peers or simulated patients for experience in obtaining histories and performing physical examinations. On occasion, didactic sessions or experiences utilizing real patients are employed as well. The clinical and community component of this course is designed to provide students with varied experiences in the field of health care. Experiences are assigned in a variety of settings where students can continue to practice their clinical skills. Essential to the course is the understanding of acute versus ambulatory care.
