PA 5110 - Physician Assistant Practice


In this course, students explore the history and development of the physician assistant (PA) profession, professional, ethical and legal issues affecting clinical practice, and the PA’s role in the healthcare system.

Requisites: Admission to the Ohio University Physician Assistant Program
Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
 

  • Students will be able to analyze the significance of current issues in the health care including US health care delivery system, healthcare policy, public health issues, and political arenas that impact the PA profession.
  • Students will be able to articulate the continuing medical education (CME) requirements for the PA.
  • Students will be able to define and discuss professionalism in PA practice.
  • Students will be able to describe the role of the PA as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Students will be able to describe the role of the Supervising Physician and the dynamics of the PA/physician relationship.
  • Students will be able to discuss approach to patient safety, quality improvement, prevention of medical errors, and risk management.
  • Students will be able to discuss cultural diversity within the PA Profession.
  • Students will be able to discuss regulations governing PA practice, credentialing, licensure, and malpractice.
  • Students will be able to discuss the certification and recertification process for state licensure and NCCPA certification.
  • Students will be able to discuss the impact of reimbursement policies on PA practice.
  • Students will be able to discuss the principals of Osteopathy.
  • Students will be able to discuss the use of evidence-based medicine and information literacy in professional practice.
  • Students will be able to evaluate employment and leadership opportunities for the PA.
  • Students will be able to explain the important roles that PA’s play in providing care to the medically under served.
  • Students will be able to explain the significant milestones in the development of the PA profession.
  • Students will be able to identify and discuss the various ethical issues confronting the PA in professional practice.
  • Students will be able to identify commonly used acronyms, abbreviations and terminology used in the PA profession.
