War and Peace Studies

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs

Program Overview: The purpose of the Graduate Certificate in War and Peace Studies is to provide graduate students with the opportunity to take classes in security studies from an interdisciplinary perspective. The program will address the increased need for employees in this field, especially in the post 9-11 era. In addition, there is great demand from students from across the University for such a Certificate. It would service students from any department or any school. The curriculum involves a rich diversity of courses and faculty across the university, which will be refreshed each year (much like the other certificates). No financial requirements are needed for this program since all courses are currently on the books.

Admissions Information: No requirements beyond University admission requirements.

Change of Major/Minor/Certificate Policy: No selective or limited admission requirements.

External Transfer Admission: No requirements beyond University admission requirements.

Opportunities Upon Graduation: There has been a recent and dramatic spike in demand for students with a focus and training in security studies. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security, new emphases on improved intelligence analysis and risk assessments, border control, immigration, heightened proliferation threats in Iran, North Korea, and other countries, increased attention and hiring in the areas of counter terrorism and counterinsurgency, as well as reconstruction and development in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan, and the militarization of development all culminate in demand for students well trained in war and peace studies. In addition, our students would be well-equipped for careers at NGOs, IGOs, multinational corporations, and think tanks. No other school in Ohio has a program of this kind. Ohio State has a Security and Intelligence Program which is not as broadly conceived as ours; Miami of Ohio has a Conflict, Peace, and Diplomacy major which is also not as broadly or coherently conceptualized as ours will be. This unique program will be a useful recruitment device for students seeking graduate training. Further, this is an interdisciplinary program that brings faculty from across the university together to offer the classes and necessary training. Faculty from the following departments were consulted in the development of this certificate: Political Science, History, Philosophy, Geography, Anthropology, Sociology, Education, Journalism, Communication Studies.
