Theater (M.A.)

Program Overview: The Master of Arts degree in Theater is a 30-credit program that offers a strong base in theater history and performance studies with additional coursework in playwriting, directing or design and technology. All work takes place in the context of a professionally oriented School of Theater. Masters’ students demonstrate their proficiency through a comprehensive examination, written thesis, performance project, or, in exceptional cases, a professional internship. This program allows graduate students and those entering the professional theater to broaden future goals and hone skills.

Admissions Policy: Admission is based on a 3.0 GPA in undergraduate work, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample. Admission to an area of specialization is required for entry. Specialization areas may include theater history/drama, playwriting, directing, production design and technology or performance. The GRE is NOT required for this program. International students must consult the University webpage for international studies for further information on such topics as the TOEFL, speak test, visas, and others.

Opportunities: Students completing their M.A. in Theater commonly choose to enter the professional market for performing arts companies, pursue academic careers, or further their studies with terminal M.F.A. or Doctoral degrees.

Total 30 semester credit hours required with 16 credit hours required in Major Area Studies, 10 credit hours in Supportive Theater and Performance Studies, 4 credits of electives.
