You must offer a minimum of six quarters of residence credit as a fulltime equivalent student beyond the master’s degree. You are required toshow reading proficiency in two foreign languages; in particular cases, demonstrated proficiency in quantitative methods may be substituted for one language. You must complete a nonhistory minor of three graduate courses in one cognate field or four courses in two cognate fields. Within the area of concentration, you normally will select two fields, in one of which the dissertation will be written. You also will do coursework in two fields outside the area of concentration. Areas and fields are as follows:

Area one. American history: colonial, 19th century, 20th century, U.S. foreign relations, U.S. social-intellectual, U.S. Military, U.S. economic (in cooperation with the Department of Economics).

Area two. European: western Europe, European diplomatic, Tudor- Stuart England, England since 1815, Eastern Europe, Russia, ancient, medieval Europe, and Renaissance and Reformation.

Area three. Third World: Africa, east Asia, southeast Asia, Middle East and Mediterranean, Latin America.
