Music Major (B.A.)

Major code BA5195

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music degree is designed for talented musicians who wish to study a general music curriculum, while pursuing the broader and more flexible liberal arts education. An audition and writing sample are required for admission to the program–this can be arranged by contacting the School of Music. 

A 3.0 accumulative average is required to remain in the B.A. major.

Universitywide Graduation Requirements


To complete this program, students must complete all Universitywide graduation requirements.

Arts and Sciences Requirements for Fine Arts


200-Level Courses


Complete 90 hours of Arts and Sciences coursework at or above the 200 level.

Foreign Language Requirement


Complete the equivalent of two years of college-level foreign language.

Humanities


Complete 18 hours of Arts and Sciences humanities coursework from two or more areas, with at least eight hours in one area.

Social Sciences


Complete 18 hours of Arts and Sciences social sciences coursework from two or more areas, with at least eight hours in one area.

Natural Sciences


Complete 18 hours of Arts and Sciences natural sciences coursework from two or more areas, with at least eight hours in one area.

Music Requirements: 72 credit hours


Music Theory


Must achieve a minimum of B- in each course

Aural Skills


Must achieve a minimum of B- in each course

Music History


Must achieve a minimum of B- in each course

Applied Music


Complete 6 quarters on the principle instrument for a total of 12 credit hours

Additional Requirements


Students must complete the following additional requirements:

  • attain junior standing in performance, by passing a qualifying jury at the end of the sophomore year;
  • complete 2 performance lab (MUS 090) performances;
  • pass the second year review to remain in the program; and
  • either pass a piano proficiency or complete the following 3 class piano courses with a B or better:

Ensemble


Students must perform in a major ensemble on the principle instrument for a total of 6 quarters.  (See music handbook for appropriate ensembles for each principle instrument). 

Performance Lab


Additional Music Courses


Complete additional music courses, as needed, to complete the 72-hour requirement, except the following:
