In a diverse set of disciplines in five departments, graduate study in The Patton College of Education bridges the gap between theory and practice in education and human service fields. Course work provides opportunities for students to pursue in-depth study of the theoretical and empirical foundations of their chosen disciplines. Clinical field experiences and internships and research projects help students integrate theory and practice. Interdisciplinary study is encouraged.

Master’s and doctoral students may attend full or part time. Whereas some programs use a cohort approach, others enable students to develop individual programs that they complete at their own pace. Many Patton College graduate programs are offered in non-traditional formats that fit well with working professionals’ needs.

All professional education programs in the College are fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The Counselor Education Program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).

Detailed information concerning graduate programs is available from the Office of Student Affairs, The Patton College of Education, Ohio University, McCracken Hall 124, Athens, OH 45701 or online at http://www.cehs.ohio.edu/.

Doctoral Programs

Advanced preparation leading to the Ph.D. or Ed.D. is also offered in The Patton College of Education. Criteria for admission to a doctoral program include evidence of continuing potential for academic and professional success as reflected in prior GPAs at master’s and bachelor degree levels of study and score performance on standardized tests. Additional requirements vary by program, and may include the quality of evidence provided in letters of recommendation, an autobiographical statement, or resume, and an invited interview. Most doctoral programs in the College use a “portfolio” process by which the program faculty examines multiple types of evidence in making admission decisions. Specific information regarding criteria for admission, financial assistance, and scholarships is available from the Office of Student Affairs, The Patton College of Education, McCracken Hall 124, and online at http://www.cehs.ohio.edu/.
